Easy Shortcuts to Better Speeches

Taken from The Toastmaster Magazine, April 1999
  • Work backwards…with a destination in mind, your speech will be well organized.

  • Dig deeply…be sure to research unfamiliar topics thoroughly

  • Start with a big bang…devise and opening that will grab audience attention

  • Spice up your speech…liven up your speech with anecdotes

  • Speak with confidence…get the “butterflies” to fly in formation

  • Rehearse out loud…rehearse ou loud to be sure presentation goes smoothly

  • Make your notes “noteworthy”…write speech in short paragraphs, underline key words, as you practice, you will memorize those words and the body of the speech will come naturally

  • Offer a rousing finish…the easiest and quickest way to prepare the ending is to restate the theme---your “carry-away” message
